Prefabricated Power Plant, Grise Fiord

Grise Fiord, located 1,140km north of the Arctic Circle, is the most northerly inhabited region in Canada. Difficult to access, Grise Fiord is one of the regions with the lowest temperature in the world. The climate and the tight deadlines due to a very short navigation season were important constraints to consider in performing the mandate.

The project in pictures

The project proposed by Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) consists of replacing their aging diesel-burning electrical facility with a new, more efficient 900 kW power station, for community distribution.

In a consortium with EBC, our teams used a design-build model to construct a prefabricated power station of seven distinct, quickly assemblable modules.

Part of the project, carried out with Tardif Métal, a subsidiary of Groupe SM Tardif, consisted of fabrication of the steel structure, the piles, the floor, the walls, the studs and the interior and exterior cladding.

SM Construction then performed the architectural work. The team also took charge of installing the power station’s four generators.

 

 

 

Finally, SM Construction and Pagui, a subsidiary of Groupe SM Tardif, performed the mechanical, electrical, HVAC and plumbing work. Pagui also provided all telecommunication services at the plant, including the installation of computer cabling, fiber optic cabling and surveillance cameras.

Once the construction, pre-assembly and tests were completed, the power station was dismantled and transported by boat to Grise Fiord.

By using the modular approach, the seven modules could be reassembled without repeating work, which allowed the team to limit the commissioning time.

Our client’s request was fulfilled brilliantly. The schedule was advanced by one year and the costs were greatly reduced thanks to the wise choice of partners.
